When is the best time to pay for checked-in bags on Ryanair?

When booking a flight on Ryanair, is it best value to book a checked-in case (20kg) at the same time as booking the flight (which looks to be about twice the price of the fare), or wait until nearer the actual date of the flight? A friend said they usually email you with offers on extra baggage, car hire etc, as time goes on, but having never flown with them before, I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice please? Thanks all!

I've just checked the Ryanair website again and it says Adding a 20kg Check-in Bag after booking will be more expensive. Book now for the best price. My friend seems to think otherwise though. Has anyone had any experiences please?
