I have been keeping an eye on this thread for a while, but I really have to join in now before I drool all over my keyboard!
I tried to make some little chocolate hearts out of the tesco silicon molds with tesco value plain chocolate. I thought I'd start testing with the cheapest and work my way up, hey, I have until Easter to perfect these! Anyway, it didn't work out very well, they were dull on the surface and not nice and shiney, but I don't know if that is due to the mold, the chocolate, or my chocolate melting abilities!?!
Would anyone be able to share what chocolate they have tried and whether it gave a nice shiney finish?

I used the Tesco heart moulds with Tesco milk, white and plain choc. They came out well and were shiney. I used the value choc once before and that didn't taste as nice and don't remember them being as shiney. HTHsaving for ds2's summer international scout camp - £200

Looking at that choccie (yum!) I would have thought it would be nice to try and do all the snow and snowflakes in white chocolate, don't know how mind, maybe painting with a paintbrush? Did you do yours by tempering again Jem8472? It also looks quite nice and shiny, what choccie did you use?
Oh and welcome babybunny, chocolate making in my opinion is all about trying things out, (and learning from others [strike]mistakes[/strike] here)

Its due to the silcone molds, if you use plastic molds and polish them with cotton wool then the choc will come out shiny.
But tempering the chocolate helps the shine!JeremyMarried 9th May 20090 -

Exactly what I thought as soon as I saw it. Could fill the white chocolate bits in first carefully (tiny spoon/knife) or something, let them set a bit and then put the main milk chocolate in. Or 'paint' it on afterwards. Writing would look nice in white, too, but I don't think you fill it in on that mould - seems embossed.0 -

Right, so I will take bunbun2's advice and start with the next level of Tesco chocolate, and see how that goes. If I make a mess of that, I'll know it's my own fault because we have the same mold!
Don't even get me started on trying to temper the chocolate?! That's waaaay too advanced! But I do have a large selection of Ikea ice-cube molds so I could give those a try as well.
Hmmmm...it's going to take a lot of experimenting to get this right - this is not going to help my diet!
