  • I think it depends on the type of ice cube tray as some of them are the silicon type. I bought these hot chocolate stirrers in Brugge in October but it might be an idea to try with a deepish ice cube tray...

The chocolate from lidl is good to melt and is only 24p for 100g
If you use a round silicone tray you can make it into a pizza with grated white chocolate on the top for cheese.
I seen this at a craft show i went to and it was £11 for a 7 or 8" one

hmmmmmm sounds so good will def have to try that couple of toppings wouldnt go a miss either

I've made these lovely biscuits for gifts this Christmas and have worked out that each jar cost me approx £2.25 including the jar! I'm trying to work out how to post a picture of them (can anyone help?). Basically they're glass Kilner jars (from a local cheapo shop) and I've tied some old labels on them with my neatest handwriting saying "Homemade shortbread fingers drizzled with dark dark chocolate, made with love, Happy Christmas". And they look top! I've made mini-florentines too but they're not quite as foolproof and also they work out a bit more expensive.
A lot of my friends have had children this year and it's getting expensive to buy individual pressies so we're giving these jars out cos they're a family gift and hopefully the contents will be demolished appreciatively!
Also I've done spiced nuts (almost laughingly simple) by toasting mixed nuts with some chinese-5-spice mix and some salt and packing in a lovely jar. And I've also done jams and chutneys but I didn't get the fruit in summer so they've ended up costing me more but at least I've learnt from that mistake! Anyway, I'm terribly pleased with myself cos they all look delicious -and I'm not an experienced cook I promise!

Can I ask those of you who are using ice cube trays, do you need to line them with something so the chocolate comes out easily?

Mt step daughter came over last night for weekend and said she had brought money to buy presents for her best friend and BF but didnt know what to buy. I showed her this thread and she said "yeah coool!". First attempt we melted in a pan direct and it was a disaster so 2nd time we did the tried and tested in a bowl over boiling water and it worked a treat. We only had a metal pan lined with clingfilm, we did 3 types of chocolate and swirled them around with a fork. She then put silver balls on top and this morning has got an icing pen and will ice the name on./ I'll post a piccy then! Then do it all again for BF. Got cellophane left from hampers too.
I'm def gonna get an ice tray and do those mini ones for my hampers next year.

  • Ooh another litle idea which im going to try later is find an advent calender with white chocolate and place all the little chocolates on a slab of milk chocolate :]

Now i wil actually go to shop again to find advent chocolate (doubt there will be any though :/ lol worth a try)

I don't know if its cheaper but M&S often just do their own moulded chocolate figures (animals, handbags, lipsticks etc) which just come in trays, so you wouldn't have to use an advent calender. Great idea though!

Also, my mum often adds a dash of double cream and grand marnier to plain chocolate to make it taste richer.
  • going to try making some of these tonight. I have been to asda and stocked up on choc - white, milk and dark. I also have fruit, nuts, mini smarties, white choc buttons and dolly mixtures:rolleyes:  .

OH loves dark choc and fruit/nuts.
DD loves everything except dark choc and fruit/nuts so she will be easy:D
DS loves milk choc with anything.
and I want a white choc one with cranberries and rice crispies - yummy!!!

If they turn out okay I will post pictures:D
