Ryan Air Small bag carry on

Options
Hello,

I just wondered if anyone out there could shed some light on Ryan Air small bag carry on policy.
Before we start, I know they’re very strict (maybe I’m answering my own question already).
The max bag height is 40cm. My sons rucksack is a few cms over but it won’t be full. If it scrunches down and therefore fits in the sizing bin and under the seat would this be okay?

Thank you

The only answer which can be given with any certainty is 'possibly'.  Common sense would suggest it would be OK, but we are talking RyanAir here.  Even if they say yes on the way out there is no guarantee they will do so on the way back.
  • Exactly. Where they can make a few quid they will and I guess it depends on the mood of the person overseeing it at the time! However I’ve just seen a video from Ryan air themselves showing the sizing bin and it states ‘if it fits it flies’. The bag will fit as will crumple down, so I might risk it. I am loathed to go and spend more money on a bag when it’s just for the sake of empty space.
    Thanks for your input!

I wouldn't have any problem taking a bag a few cm's bigger - as you say if its not rammed full it will fit in the guage. I've done it many times and never had an issue.

As you say there's an element of pot luck,  but I'd say the balance of favour is in the many that get away with it vs the few that get caught. I always marvel at the suitcases some people get away with!

I would be confident - even if they are thoroughly checking everyone, when your bag fits in the sizing frame it passes the test and you can board with it. If they are just pulling those with cases that look oversize, they can tell by sight that yours isn't - that's what usually happens in my experience of flying always with just a soft under-seat bag.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • Thank you for your reassurance. I’m going to risk it and hope for the best. 🤞🏼👍🏼
