My "Loyalty Octopus" 12m fixed on change tariff page has a single unit rate for electric of 67p.
Someone else's "Loyalty Octopus" 12m fixed on change tariff page has a night time of 51p and day time rate of 72p.

Why is one dual rate and the other single rate under the same tariff name? any ideas.

  • If you visit this link: octopus.energy/tariffs/ and pop in your postcode you will see a list of tariffs (don't click get a quote, just put your postcode in). Every tariff has a single rate with one rate, a E7 rate for a Night and Day tariff, plus a rate for gas too, it all depends on what meter(s) the customer has installed.

From my understanding this is the same for all suppliers, and all tariffs.

Ok in this case we both have smart meters.

Thanks for the info that this is normal practice to have two tariffs on one name, I would expect the tariffs for dual rate to have E7 in the name or something.
  • Example, this is for me in North Yorkshire.

What type of meter do you have?

In the two examples I gave we both have smart meters.

The guy getting offered dual rates is on the go tariff, I am on agile, so is it possible the existing tariff has an impact as well?
  • I have a SMETS1 Smart meter (that has been enrolled into the SMETS2 system). I also have it set-up as a single rate, so i only pay 1 rate. But smart meters can be changed remotely to change them into a E7 tariff, with a day and night reading.

^ Don't forget there's also regional variation, so members here could find exactly the same tariff showing different rates for them.

But if you and the other person mentioned in your first post are in the same region, then the difference is still fully explained by one having dual rates and you having a single rate.

Your current tariffs will influence what fixes you're shown on your own account (single or dual rate) but you can of course see all the tariffs available in your area on the page linked above.  The information you see on that page will be exactly the same as what's shown to someone else in the same region as you.

Yes the question wasnt about the unit rate, just the single rate vs dual rate.

Thank you, all makes sense to me now.

Can't speak for octopus specifically, but I've seen many companies offer the same name tariff with different rates for different meter types

To be fair the name isn't really of importance, it's just easier I guess for people that using a code or number for describing a tranche of set rates that they will offer at a set time - after all the rates vary by region as well whilst still having the same name.

That said, some of the names are getting a bit silly now.... If energy companies did car names the name badge would run the length of the car....

On my Octopus change your tariff part of the site there are two fixed rates, the difference is about 3p per kWh electric and 1p per kWh gas on the dearest rates. This isn't E7 but single rate.
Someone please tell me what money is

Is one of them maybe the "Loyal" tariff for customer who are already longer with Octopus? The word Loyal should be part of the tariff name, so not the same tariff.
