Both the website and app insist on "verifying" the account with a mobile number (as if that "verifies" anything).
It won't accept landlines.  
I assume you have (or had) a dumb mobile phone just to set up your account?

It shows that you are in possession of the physical phone and are capable of applying the code sent through, which is not an option on an analogue system. Presumably chatbots aren't clever enough to replicate yet? (Because its a very common request by all sort of institutions, from banks to professional portals to retailers).

Yes, I have a dumb (mobile) phone and that was acceptable for receiving a log in code on the website.

Must be a problem they have been told about as the general CS reaction to a Rewards problem is a shrug of the shoulders and told to phone the help line.
