We have an after xmas dinner tradition - The Jeffrey Present. When me and exoh first got together years ago I already had two dds. He would phone sometimes pretending to be Mummy's other boyfriend jeffrey. To prove his existence to the sceptical girls we got a present for Jeffrey who was supposed to be coming for xmas diner. As he never turned up LOL we got to open it after dinner and it turned out to be soemthing the whole family could enjoy - can't remember what. We have had a Jeffrey Present now for over 14 years and it's usually game or a puzzle or something. This year Jeffrey is getting a chocolate fountain .... if he turns up. It's so funny cos if dinner is getting late and the girls are asking what time it will be I just answer "i'm giving Jeffrey some time to get here" and there is this whole thing all day of speculating whether he will finally come this year. Other parts of my family now have Jeffrey Presents and it's a lovely way of rounding off the day together
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008
  • In our house we still get a xmas present "from the xmas tree"

I don't know where this came from - the presents are quite small (stocking filler kind) and often Mum would put them in the tree when we weren't looking. They would also turn up early evening, long after all other presents were opened, so maybe something that's saved for later...

Then over to Granny's for boxing day, where her tree would also give us a present!

All food very normal and very tasty I'm afraid.... although I myself am partial to a marmite and jam sandwich......

My family had some strange food habits.

Christmas day breakfast was pork pie.

Rest of the time could be strange. Tinned fruit and tinned cream - with bread and marge. I wasn't allowed to eat the bread first or I would be given more. My mum later told me that it was because SHE liked it like that! I detested it.

    bread and marge with porridge.

I wasn't allowed just dry bread either, it had to have marge on it. I loathed marge and would have been perfectly happy with bread. Anyone remember 'Echo' marge?

Bread with salt water gravy - a slice of white bread with 'gravy' made with sugar burnt in a spoon on the gas stove which was used to colour the salty water thickened with flour. Still, I should be grateful, today it would be the cheapest ready meals she could find! The bread and gravy may not have done me any good, but it didn't do me any harm.
  • Moany - Are you from Leicester cos I was just about to come and post the same thing about the porkpie.

My mum has it every year for christmas day breakfast (only christmas day mind!!) My dad used to have it with picalilly and me and my brother like mustard with thick crusty bread too!! My husband thinks we are weird as he is used to bacon, eggs and sausage!!!

My gran used to tell me stories about walking for miles to pick up a pork pie from walker on christmas eve!!

My husbands family have red cabbage with their christmas dinner which I find bizarre
  • when i lived with the old folk we used to have buck fizz and salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast on christmas day, now it just quality street for breakfast:D my OH family (and whole island it seems) has a tradition at christmas (boxing day) to have reestit mutton, which i can only describe as a piece of old mutton which has been sitting around drying in a cupboard all year, they have it with tattie soup (i'm veggie) and homemade bannocks which are fab, but my OH and me have such different tastes, he has never had hot custard, they only use custard cold, they never put milk in their spuds when mashing...never ever:eek: still shocks me,:D but they do use milk in tomato soup and not just a little bit but loads of it_pale_ and one of his fave snacks is crushed digestive with cold custard and milk..yuk!

his grandparents diet is a shocker, its all fried meat every day with heaps of lard and butter, no fruit ever! no veg apart from a tin of veg shared out on sunday with sunday dinner.
    totally a tog!:D

When I was wee (many moons ago) I used to love soup day. My mum usually made the soup with boiling beef. After the soup course, we always had the beef in the same soup plate, with mashed tatties and turnip and also a few spoonfuls of the leftover soup over it all.
Sounds really gross now, but I loved it.

What's wrong with that:confused: I smiled when I read this post, I thought it was a scottish thing, then I looked at your location....Fife. Maybe it's just us. The important part of this was the shape of the soup plate. I have soup plates now (very difficult to find), but the kids hate them, they want soup in a "bowl".

We're having this for our Xmas dinner, but it's just me and bf. Reminds me of Xmas as my bf is Austrian and they have it with a lot of their meals, but we only tend to go over there for summer or xmas.

  • We used to have mars bar and apple sandwiches (on brown bread for good health :)) for special picnics - admittedly probably only twice a year.

Sandwiches with orange juice still make me think of the beach (somehow I always expect to taste sand in them).

We always have some kind of bucks fizz or champagne for breakfast on Xmas day. DHs family have developed a trick of constantly topping up their mums glass so that they can keep her out of the kitchen and sort out the dinner themselves - this destresses everyone :)

Oh and we used to have sugar sandwiches as well as kids :) for midnight feasts. No wonder my teeth aren't in good shape.
