Hi everyone,

Right now, there are no tariffs meaningfully cheaper than the current price cap, so it’s not about switching your deal to something cheaper. It’s all about whether you’ve been offered a deal that’s likely to be cheaper than the price cap rates over the next year.

If we factor in around two months on the current rate, three at October’s, three at January, three at April’s and one at July’s, using industry analysis firm Cornwall Insight’s latest predictions and adjusting for higher use in winter, on average a typical price-capped bill would be 96% higher over the next year than it is now.

So our rule of thumb is:

If you're offered a year's fix at no more than 95% above your current price-capped tariff, or 100% more if you very strongly value budgeting certainty, it's worth considering.

This isn’t an exact science – fixing below this point isn’t a slam dunk, this is our best-guess with the information we have.

We’ve full info in Martin's Should I fix guide, including a table of the latest existing customers deals we know about. Be aware though, that we use typical, average use to compare, so the price you’ll be offered will be different, based on your region and usage.

It’s also worth noting that some firms, such as Bulb, don’t offer fixed deals to its customers. We’ve full info on that in the guide above – but in a nutshell it means you’ll need to move to the cheapest open-market fix, which are much more expensive right now, and likely won’t fall within our switching percentage.

Hope that helps!

  • Just checked my app from gas company. I'm getting a fixed price for gas and electric for £186 a month going up from £102 a month. The new tariff fixed me in at £2119 for the year until aug 2023.
They do however want to put up my dd to £119 now and I am sure it will need to go up again in Oct and Jan. So am I better off locking this one in now as by Jan I could be paying over £200 anyway.

My electricity is with octopus, go faster (until end Nov) gas with shell on the cap. As of last Thursday for gas I was offered loyal 12m and variable with octopus:

    Loyal 12m Fixed-

    Unit charge 17.18p/kWh
    Standing charge 27.22p/day

    Flexible Octopus-

    Unit charge 7.34p/kWh
    Standing charge 27.22p/day

Any advice on which is best please? Or whether to just stick? Thanks to you experts ☺️
  • Hi guys, I am hoping you can help me. I am an existing E-on next customer and am being offered a one year fix titled Next Online V18, I have seen this mentioned in the weekly email from you guys and quoted at much higher than I am being offered. The fix offer is an annual cost of £1,970 which is what I'm essentially paying now on a variable rate. I dont know if this is being offered widely as I have not seen on any forums about it but anyway I am considering going for this. I think they are going to offer me a smart metre as well and potentially this will be enforced, I just worry that A) i will still pay more than the quoted £1,970 and B) does a smart metre potentially mean I will pay more as well or does it not matter, as the unit prices are going to be fixed at 52p for electricity and 13p for gas?

Any advice welcome - I am dubious of the fixed offer as I seen the same one from Martin being quoted at around 2,600 - so if this seems a great deal to you guys I will take it!

    Best wishes,
    Aaron
  • Hi, our energy tariff runs out next week with outfox the market. Currently play £180 a month for both ( currently have £200 in credit) , new tariff will be £480 a month! Do we sign up to this new tariff or just go on to the standard variable? if we do not go for this tariff can we join one later down the line? What is the best option? many thanks
  • I'm currently on Scottish Power capped economy 7 rate D 34.72p, N 15.82p and SC 43.5p. The 1 year fix til August 31 2023  is D 50.95 (+45%) N 32.05 (+100%) and SC 43.48. Aspects of this rate are variable.
Our new Flexi tariffs consist of two parts. The first part is a fixed price, the majority of which is for the energy we supply you, so this protects you from rising wholesale energy costs. The second part is the variable costs, which are linked to external industry costs such as network, social and environmental obligation costs that may increase or decrease throughout the tariff term. If these variable costs change, the charges payable by you will be updated on a quarterly basis on 1st January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October until the end of the tariff and these new charges will apply until the next quarterly update.'
I'm fortunate in that I can afford to take a risk. Should I fix do you think?

Sorry, when I say seems a lot, I realise that prices are going up loads, but just even given that, the usage rates offered seem very high!
    Thanks again.
  • Martin, are you still advising people to do nothing with their energy suppliers?
Should I do nothing and be placed on the 'Standard' tariff?
My joint Gas and Electricity fixed contract runs out at the end of this month.
    Should I do nothing?
I'm with ScottishPower, and they are offering fixed 2yr deals but are triple to what I am paying at the moment.
    Any advice, please?
  • I am about to move house so need to sign up with a new electricity provider.
The current owners are with Bulb.
Should sign up for a fixed deal now? I have seen some comments regarding Bulb so would this have to be a new provider?
I don't have a current provider as we have been living with family.
    Thanks
  • I'm with Outfox the Market and my fixed tariff is just about to end. Should I switch to standard or get a fixed tariff? Standard projection quoted is 2331.00 for dual fuel and fixed quote is over 5000.00.
