Please see attached pictures of gas meter in situ.  it's boxes inside a cupboard. I have never smelt any gas smell at all .
The !!!!!! off valve is before the meter.
The meter read difference was pretty much exactly the same with the valve and boiler off, as with the valve in and boiler off.
I'll have to have a look at what these tests are that you mention and give them a go, as stated I'm very unknowledgeable when it comes to gas/plumbing in general.

I really appreciate the replies and advice though people, I will keep at it.

    Thank you
    Peter

  • I’m pretty sure that’s an ultrasonic gas meter as the serial number starts E6. The are prone to incrementing (reading increasing with no usage). They tend to get faster and faster over time. Ask your supplier for an ofmat test. You may need to pay for this but it would be reimbursed if the meter was found to be faulty and I’m confident it would based on the tests you’ve carried out.

The earth on the outlet is in the wrong place. For what it’s worth. Just an observation

Did you say you had isolated the gas into the boiler?
I’ve seen many gas valves pass and go straight out of the flue. You’d not smell anything in this instance.

Thank you for the information, it's greatly appreciated. Looks like I shall be going down that route then. Looks like it may cost about £160ish for the test if they deem it not faulty though unfortunately, which is also money I simply cannot afford at the moment.

I'll give them a call I think and see what they say.

Just another point regarding my really high bills, I have noticed that when the central heating is on in the winter, the amount of steam(?) coming out the outlet outside is an incredible amount, especially compared to next doors, whose is directly opposite so easy to compare. Almost like being in a steam room!

Yes. I've shut off the valve at the meter itself and turned off the boiler, if this is what you mean? Would it be worth isolating the gas inlet at the boiler as well as at the meter?

    Thanks as always guys.

Steam: is one boiler a condensing boiler, and one not?
If yours is circa 2002, then it predates the date that condensing ones became compulsory, in 2005.
If it's non-condensing, has a pilot light and is 20 years old, it really is time to upgrade: a condenser should be at least 10% more efficient.

I never smelt any gas when I had a leak as it was such a small leak. When I had the new meter fitted the leak had stopped.
I would get someone to come out and look at it now, before it gets worse, then it'll be condemned for a fe days in the middle of winter when you really need the hit water and heating.

But the meter wouldn’t be tested. The OP has potentially been overcharged for years, but would have no way of getting this fixed if the meter was simply removed.

Yep, however tempting it may be to get a smart meter which would fix the problem moving forward, it means getting compensated will be very hard.

I know this as I have a similar situation now but on electric, I originally asked for a meter test and agreed to pay the fee, Octopus stonewalled me, then convinced me they would test the same day as the meter swap, the swap was done, and now of course I am in a position where the old meter cant be tested.

You just going to have to push, keep pushing, push hard, ring every day, until they agree to book a test.
