USA roaming ... Surely this can't be the cheapest way?

Hi all,

I'm travelling to the USA for about 10 days in October. I am currently on a Plusnet 30 day SIM only deal.

From reading the guide on here, it looks like the cheapest way to do this will be to cancel my Plusnet,  switch to 3 PAYG for a data bundle while I'm away, then take out a new SIM only deal when I'm back (3 reception is poor where I am). This seems silly and convoluted, can anyone think of anything better? I don't have a dual SIM phone and it's not worth my getting one just now.

Thanks in advance.

Much simpler, as you realise, to retain your Plusnet and take an additional Three PAYG for your trip. If you need to have your Plusnet number available for incoming SMS etc, perhaps you have an old handset or could borrow one to use for that SIM, with the Three SIM in your regular phone for data. WhatsApp and other apps will function regardless of the temporary SIM replacement.

I was looking at this just the other day.

For ease of use, the need to communicate,  run the Google maps traffic  and no risk of running out went for the £10 option for 2 phones.

Can leave it on all the time

    https://www.three.co.uk/payg-data-packs

If you don't need a lot of data there is a
    1month 1GB for £3.
    3month 3GB for £7.99

We have a lot of WiFi access so will probably use less than 2GB unless we do a bit of streaming used to get away a couple of data reward but was very careful.

Yes thanks, also worth considering I think - would definitely need to have my Plusnet number active for two factor authentication. Is carrying around two phones more annoying maybe than two network changes? One for me to work out.

If you do go for Three PAYG sim then order and check it well in advance of going to the US. Unless something changed recently they send you to Amazon to purchase them and if you read the reviews lots of complaints that no data allowance present when activating and very hard to get support.

Ours were up and running with my3 accounts in around 5mins(each).
(Needs a different app to the data reward SIMs)

Can be worth doing a test call and text to check that works in the Uk

I had a problem calling back to UK fixed on the chat quickly as auto network had gone to At&T changed to T-Mobile sorted.

setting up data rewards could go wrong getting  sorted on 3 chat was always relatively quick.
