Sent an email receipt from SumUp

in Credit cards
I recently made a contactless purchase and was surprised to be emailed a receipt from a company called SumUp.
I had not given my email address to the merchant or ever had anything to do with SumUp so I am concerned as to how my email address was obtained.
I have contacted my credit card company who assure me that there is no leakage of information on their part.
Has anyone else experienced this?

I think you will have given your email address when you paid another merchant who also used SumUp as their payment provider. It's fairly common with the newer breed of payment processors aimed at sole traders and small businesses I think.Official MSE Forum Team member. Please report all problem posts to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Thank you James for the explanation.
It sounds feasible but doesn't sit well as this means my email address can be passed on without my agreement. Does data protection not cover this?
Is it possible to remove my details from SumUp?0 -

Time is a path from the past to the future and back again. The present is the crossroads of both. :cool:0 -
I bought a coffee on Saturday with my debit card. I switched on my WORK mobile this morning to find a receipt from SumUp for the purchase. My bank doesn’t even have this number so how on earth did SumUp get hold of it? Can anyone help as I am really concerned? I have alerted the IT team at work and am trying to get hold of my bank to speak to them. I’ve also contacted SumUP to ask what data they have on me to try to get it deleted.0
