I suspect others will also be wondering if they made the right decision to switch to ASHP in the past year or so.

Even with the cheaper electricity at the start of last year and the +/- £11k grant we could have grabbed, I couldn't make the numbers add up when considering if I should replace our ancient oil boiler with an ASHP.

Despite the increase in heating oil prices this year, I'm glad we didn't press the button on an ASHP installation.

I learned last week from another post that LPG is now cheaper than oil per kwh.
I have no idea what it costs to get an LPG tank and LPG boiler installed though, so you would have to factor that into the cost of moving away from your ASHP. The payback time might be lengthy.

If you do decide to go down the LPG route, perhaps an option would be to leave the ASHP in place and get the LPG boiler plumbed in parallel with switch over valves do you could toggle between the two based on the relative fuel costs.

LPG boiler installation cost is the same as for mains gas (same boiler, just a different jet size).

The tank come free from the supplier, but you do need to provide a concrete base for it.

The supplier usually has a tank rental charge of about £80 per year.
  • It's a tricky one. Cos I don't mind the ashp. But I'm using 12000kw plus a year. That at 29p for now adds up!!!

I have an ASHP in a four bedroom bungalow, timber-framed built in 1980.  It used a little over 6000 kWh in the last year (Feb 21 to Jan 22).  That's just the ASHP; it has its own electricity meter.

  • I here electric is going to get very expensive by January! Mybe over 69p kW. I'm looking to do something either improve my ashp? Or replace it? Anybody any ideas 💡 🤔
  • I'm having ASHP installed next week. Started the process before the 'energy' crisis kicked off. I realise not the optimum time, but is it ever! I'm relaxed about the energy price increases, no point in getting stressed over something I have no control over. We have a 14Kw log burner with internal fan and ducting that can and will heat the whole house if needed, (3 bed bungalow).
Planning a 5kw solar PV and 5Kw + battery. Not planning on moving anytime, so rather than leaving money use it for something practical. To the OP, buy a log burner if it's within your means and house is suitable?

  • We have a little log burner, but it's built in to the wall and is not really big enough. Also this summer I fit 6kw solar witch I'm very happy with

That's quite a lot of electricity. Is your house particularly large / draughty / ancient? If not, your ASHP might not be correctly set up.
