Fixed tariff energy and house move

  • Sorry for the delay. Basically we've been told that if the property we are moving to is with British Gas then we can move our tariff with us but if not then BG are not taking on any new properties so we will have to close our account and stay with whoever is currently the supplier at the new house.  We've checked and the vendors are not with BG so looks like we will have to switch - this is why there was a delay in getting back to you all. BG advised that realistically no one is taking on new customers so once we move we will probably not be able to switch and in any case it is unlikely to save us any money at the moment

You can contact your current supplier to find out.

A lot don't llow you to move with your current deal.
  • Your contract is for your meter, not your person.

If you move house, you end one contract and start a new one - with whoever is already supplying the new meter until you switch.  Very few are taking incoming switches at the moment at any sort of sensible price, so you'll likely have the option of fix or SVT with the existing supplier at the new house.

except the BG site says it is usually possible so it was worth asking  - I began this thread assuming it would be a big no. In fact, if the house we were moving to was with BG already then we could have moved our tariff to them. The issue is who the incumbent supplier is. I learned something in any case.

  • "Usually possible" is a very strong message, and wasn't even generally true in the old world.

Sometimes you could, and the chance was a bit bigger with certain suppliers, and a bit bigger again if the same supplier happened to be involved with both properties.

You are right though, it does no harm asking and you could have got lucky.

Yes based on the "usually" i assumed a hard no. Sadly the vendors are with Octopus energy :(
