The blockage was caused by my husband using Gillette shaving gel.
That sounds a bit far-fetched.   Looking at the COSHH Data Sheet for the product, I don't see anything that is likely to cause a build-up or blockage.  Indeed it is completely water soluble.  I'm not sure who told you it was the shaving gel that was the problem, but out of the possible causes, it seems fairly low on the list...and much more easily remedied than replacing the pipe-run.

We had the cut out chunks of plastic pipes full of blue gunge which was a big clue. There may have been something else further down, but this certainly didn't help. He probably wasn't using enough water to clear the basin at the end of his shave and it was turning back to some form of the gel in the pipes.

Forgot to mention, we'd tried one of those coily things down the plughole to try and clear it, which got stuck down the section of pipe which was channeled into the wall behind tiling, so cutting into the pipes for a temporary re-route was our only option. We knew we are ripping the majority of the bathroom out this year.

That would do it!  Not sure you can really blame Gillette for that bit!

The pipe sections with the gunge in were below the coily thing. That's still stuck in the wall behind the tiles.
