if you really arent au fait, do you at least email on it?    if you cant work out airdrop then email the important photos to your wife to collect on her ipad

failing which grab a friend/relative who can probably do it for you

For your issue, which is just a dying battery, leave the iPad connected to mains power throughout and do a normal iCloud backup (i.e. over a Wi-Fi connection) as described here - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT211228

1. Connect your device to a Wi-Fi network.
2. Go to Settings > [your name], and tap iCloud.
3. Tap iCloud Backup.

If you have a PC or Mac computer with iTunes installed you can connect to that via the USB charger/data cable and backup (and restore older backups) via that. Follow these instructions

Do you have a PC or Mac? You can transfer the photos to that very easily.
