EDF want to install new non smart meters

  • I have no problem with smart meters and will embrace them wholeheartedly when the time comes.

    What I do have a problem with is ripping out perfectly good dumb meters and scrapping them. They should wait until they reach end of life and then replace them.

    Always interesting that most of the negative posts come from people who don't have them.

    The negative posts from owners are just when they don't communicate, in which case they are the same as dumb meter, so not really worse.
    Thats because we are smart enough to control our own finances/useage and dont contribute to the ever increasing pointless  pile of gadgets, that  dont always work as shown by the many people who have them and complain about them, which inflict so called modern life.

    The amount of posts requesting help on here who say i thought my "smart" meter handled everything not knowing that their smart meters are not communicating or not actually saving them power.

    Hi colleagues.
    EDF(my supplier)phoned to say they want to install new non smart meters,  I asked them several times to confirm they were not smart meters(which I do not want) and they insisted that they were updating them.  To be fair my gas meter looks older than Victor Meldrew.  However it sounds a bit odd
    Has anyone else have experience of this?  Many thanks
    None of this discussion is answering the OP's question, which is whether EDF are installing non-smart meters.

    Non-smart meters are available to be installed.
    If EDF are saying they want to install them, I'd be inclined to believe EDF.

    A friend who won't have a smart meter has had all the excuses from the supplier to have one from end of life use of the meter to it's the law that you have to have a smart meter. He just tells them that when he moved into his flat in 1982 the monthly electric was 150 kWh give or take 5 kWh and his present usage is 150 kWh give or take 5 kWh and the same with the gas.

    Whilst the decision to get a smart meter rest with the property owner there are going to be many who refuse. I only got smart meters because BG offered free electric for 8 hours a day on a Saturday or Sunday from March 2015 to March 2018. Once the tariff ended they wanted to increase my monthly DD by £8 per month so I left them because once the tariff ended I wouldn't be using the extra electric and a comparison of energy prices meant I could save over £20 per month by switching
    Someone please tell me what money is

    Sorry, that was off topic, nothing to do with meters, just me getting old.
    Perhaps the OP reminded you of him.
    I too like my smart meters, in fact I wish they would upgrade them to second generation meters, so the read the energy from my solar panels
    The SMETS1 meter specification does include the recording of export units (along with 3 months of storage). What model of SMETS1 meter do you have?

    That said, not all IHDs will show export. I have had SMETS2 meters for over 3 years and the Chameleon IHD6/CAD has only recently been updated to show an instant export figure.

    Edit: From SMETS1:

    5.3.8.3 Half hour profile data

    In each thirty minute period (commencing at the start of minutes 00 and 30 in each hour), an ESMS shall be capable of recording the following (including details of the thirty minute period to which the data relates) in the Profile Data Log(5.5.3.15):

    1. Active Energy Imported (Consumption);

    2. Active Energy Exported;

    3. Reactive Energy Imported; and

    4. Reactive Energy Exported.

    Whats wrong with a smart meter - you need a meter of some sort and as said above you should get accurate up to date billing.  Mine saves me sending readings and I can read the meter myself without going outside.  There's less radiation from a smart meter than there is from a smart phone that fries your brain or your gonads depending whether you are talking or carrying it in your pocket.

    I also agree with Robin, the introduction and roll out has been a total shambles - they should have just got on with it and not given people the choice nor allowed the energy companies to do their own thing but made sure that it was integrated from the beginning
    OP  is saying EDF want to install a NONE smart meter, a dumb meter , and he wants a smart meter. That is probably a first on this subject .
    Suppliers usually plead that none smart meters are not available..

    It certainly seems very unusual for a supplier to actively choose to install a non smart meter when they are incentivised to install a smart one and penalised if they miss targets for installs.
    Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    Maybe EDF are running low on them

    It isn't beyond the bounds of possibility that the OP lives in an area that is unsuitable for smart meters such as locations close to High Intensity Radar Installations or an area of known poor long-range communications in the Northern Region. The supplier is legally obliged to fit replacement meters at certificated end-of-life. Then again, CS may just have got it wrong and a man/woman in a van will turn up with a set of smart meters.
