  • I'll add JL Collins who has the same principles.

His stock series is essential reading: https://jlcollinsnh.com/stock-series/

Basically, get your money I'm the market. Crashes are to be expected. Stick to your plan and keep buying.

The ranking of an "expert" should include the number of things they predicted that did not happen.  Anyone can make some great predictions in retrospect simply by making lots of predictions.  The ranking should also take account of the specificity of the prediction.  I can announce that current economic conditions indicate there will be a 50% FTSE100 crash but if I dont say when the prediction is worse than useless as it may lead investors to panic and do something foolish.

Just accept that no-one knows the future and set up your portfolio to minimise as far as possible the effect of reasonably bad things happening.  People who make a living out of predicting the future of investments are charlatons and should be ignored.  Certainly dont take their utterances as evidence of anything.  If you really have skills in pre-divination the best thing to do is to keep quiet about it and grow rich in secret.

The academic research tends to show that even the best predictors, forecasters and traders only get it right 50-75% of the time at best.

  • Bertrand Russell wasn't a financial expert but he was responsible for numerous on-the-money aphorisms, one of which was:

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, and wiser people so full of doubts."

So anybody who styles themselves as an expert is usually to be viewed with at least a degree of suspicion, which is absolutely not to attack people who hold genuine credentials, in a fashion that has become sadly all too common these days. Furthermore people who make predictions tend to be ripe for exhibiting confirmation bias as human nature dictates that in general, human beings find accepting they're wrong rather difficult.

I like the YouTube videos produced by Ramin Nakisa (Pensioncraft), Damien of Damien Talks Money and James Shack.

I used to enjoy his posts!

His posts were sometimes a bit long, but were very good and he was certainly one of the most knowledgeable posters on here. I was wondering why I hadn't seen any of his posts recently - has he just left the forum?
