They cancelled return, I cancelled the outbound

This must have happened before.
The airline gave more than 14 days notice of cancelling the return flight. But the outbound was less than 7 days away, and returning to a different airport a day early and getting back to departure point (overnight stay and train) did not appeal.
I cancelled the outbound and got a full refund for both legs.
I know the compensation rules, but is there case history for when an airline cancels a return flight more than 14 days away but that makes the outbound flight less than 7 days away impractical? (One might even be stranded abroad if you go.)

not covered by the regs. If you had not been able to get a refund for the operating flight maybe your travel insurance would have helped but you don't get compensation for cancelling a flight that operates0

If I understand correctly when cancelling the return flight (with more than 14 days notice )the airline correctly offered you a choice of alternative flight or full refund of both outward and return flight . You chose the refund of both flights , as this was the more acceptable option for you . You have received a full refund for both the return flight that the airline cancelled and the out- going one that you cancelled.
If this is the case, the airline has met it’s obligations in full and no additional compensation is due under the UK/EU261 regulations.0
