We currently pay £27.30, but that includes line rental, inclusive landline calls (23.27) and 'voicemail with call protect' (4.03)

It may be cheaper to take a line rental and broadband package, even if you don't use the broadband.
Landline only will effectively become obsolete in December 2025 as the phone side will be moved over from PSTN to IP network.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I thought Call Protect was free, so don't know you are paying for it.

I doubt our copper wire will become redundant in 2025. We are too remote for FTTC even though there are five houses within 400m. FTTP was going to cost £13k IIRC!

I think basic 1571 is free but ours is the one that we can leave a personalised message on.

It won't. 95% of broadband services still come by copper wire from the cabinet. It's just PSTN that will go.

Indeed, but our cabinet is over two miles away - we can only get 2Mbps on copper, but 30 with our WISP!
