New gas supply, but no supplier

I have a slightly unusual problem - no-one to pay for my gas!

I'm in a rental property, I pay the bills and can choose my supplier. I recently had a new gas supply installed, I have an MPRN but apparently there's no supplier listed for this property on the national database. This is according to British Gas (who apparently are the incumbent supplier for East Anglia), they have no record of supply.

So what happens with the gas I've used already if no-one is officially supplying me?

Well you have tried to find out the details.

As it's a new gas supply it's easy to work out the amount of gas used so just outthat money aside as well as £100 a year for standing charges.

There are some accounts offering interest again or try you luck at premium bonds.

That is somewhat unusual, if a new supply was connected and a meter was fitted then whoever fitted it should be your supplier...

  • I think that there is a clue in the word ‘recently’. Which company installed the gas supply and meter: was it Cadent or an independent gas transporter?

Cadent did the pipework. A month later the supplier organised the installation of the smart meter but they now tell me the national database has no supplier listed for the address, and the MPRN Cadent supplied isn't valid. Until they know more they can't take over the supply.

It's not helped by the fact that the property isn't listed on the Xoserve database which drives the 'Find My Supplier' page, the due to a problem with the postcode: Xoserve are looking into it.

I've found more info elsewhere tonight about 'shipperless' supplies: if this is the case how do I know the cost of the gas I've already used?

I'll contact Cadent in the morning and see if they can shed more light on this.

If you get charged, it will be at the capped standard variable tariff for your region. There's a link in my signature that shows the current SVTs; for gas they're all around 7.4p/kWh.
Your meter will measure in cubic metres. Each cubic metre of gas contains roughly 11.2kwh. Assuming your meter read zero when installed, multiply the reading on it by 11.2 and then by 7.4, to give the approximate value in pence.
Then add the daily standing charge, 27.2p per day. You won't be far off.

Thanks QrizB, that's a very useful page you've put together there. I'm keeping regular readings so I know exactly how much I've been using (which isn't very much so far). I need to get officially in the system so I can get a good fixed tariff before the increases in October and January.

Can you have different tariffs for electricity and gas? I'm already on a fixed tariff with Octopus for electricity which started last September which obviously I want to keep. The new gas supplier is also supposed to be Octopus.
  • Suppliers normally have a new connections team. You need to speak to then not the standard CS.

Good, so you do actually have a supplier, they are just having problems getting everything setup correctly on the central database.

It may take a little while but you know your you will be paying eventually and you know how much it will be....

Incorrect: Octopus told me I don't have a supplier. They said I need to find out who it is, even though they initiated the installation of the meter. Maybe semantics, but that is what I was told.

Good to know, thanks. I'm surprised the Octopus CS didn't put me through to them. I'll ask them tomorrow.
