Please beware of The RAC everyone.

They recently renewed my (over priced) breakdown policy for £164.99 without sending any renewal documents.

The auto renew is auto ticked at sign up.

I'd been with them since 2018. I called the same day that the payment was due to be taken from my account and they wouldn't refund me fully.

Unbelievable behaviour from a company like THE RAC. Scaled up to thousands of customers this is big money for them.

I hadn't received any service from them and hadn't received the renewal email.

They are unable to provide proof of sending the renewal email.

I'm speaking with the Ombudsmen and My Bank re. a charge back.

Has anyone else had this problem with The RAC?

Thanks

Have you checked your spam folder? Do they have the correct email? Moved house?

They should have an automated system that'd send you the renewal email, so short of technical fault it should have sent.

What outcome are you expecting? A better rate or a refund?

How much, just got AA family membership for 4 people. Home, National, Roadside and relay for £174, Quidco brings it down to
    £84, £21 each.

The AA tried this trick on me 3 years ago, I recorded my cancellation call with an old mobile.
Emailed them asking for renewal to be stopped, never got a reply.
    Stopped the DD anyway.
They rang threatening me for non payment, not impressed when I laughed at them and said can’t wait to see them in court.
I said the court would love the audio recording and screen shots of my email.
That was the last thing I heard from them.

Please could you confirm the basis for the obligatory renewal email as I have a similar issue, not RAC, that I wish to challenge.

    Thanks

All insurance type products (and many others) will automatically renew if you don't cancel. I actually can't think of any equivalent that doesn't renew automatically.

There's no legal basis for doing it for anything except car insurance where you've got a legal requirement to be continually insured.

I'm not sure how valid it would be to claim that you didn't realise it didn't auto renew.

If that's the case, why was I able to opt out when I took out the policy? (Aviva car insurance).

If I remember correctly. Doc's are sent to your user area on the RAC site.

Sorry, they'll renew if you don't cancel or opt out.

I've just my RAC breakdown cover renewal through the post. So time to get on the phone to them and negotiate the renewal premium down

Are the rules about offering new customers the same price as existing applicable to breakdown cover or only the actual car insurance policy?

I just did my car insurance renewal and the renewal was within a couple of quid of my local friendly meerkats, so I simply stayed with the existing provider.

I also got my RAC renewal quote (at £172).  Best price from the meerkats £62, so I take their offer.  It happened to be RAC.  Then I call RAC to cancel the auto-renewal, which they argue about and say they'll do an offer of £99.

    What an outrage!
