Can some help me understand what i am doing please. I want to be able to pay for Public transport. petrol and a food shop at a local supermarket in Leknes Lofoten Islands in Norway. Th travel forum says cash is not really a thing anymore so people recommended i use Revolut. If i download the app can i just pay for everything with my phone app?

Revolut provide a debit card for multi-currency use with the app. Everything is explained within the app. Fully verify your account and study how to use it correctly, to avoid having to interact with their rather dismal customer services (unless you're prepared to pay monthly fees for an upgraded account).
An alternative would be Starling Bank, also app-only but a real bank, simpler to use and with decent customer service. See the MSE article for various other fee-free options, don't rely on only one, at least take your regular debit/credit card(s).
    Evolution, not revolution

I’ve found Revolut to be a great help when travelling. You can convert money to whatever currency you’d like and then when you use the card in that country, there are no conversion charges, likewise, you can withdraw cash and it doesn’t charge a fee to convert. You can use the app to see what money you have in which currency and the total money uploaded to your account.

my recollection is that you have to pay something like a fiver for a physical card, but worth it if you’re travelling I think.

Just get a fee free debit or visa card that you can use without messing about. Revolut has so many little gotchas like topping up at weekends its not worth it when there are more reliable and straight forward options available.

Get a Starling or Chase account for example and use their debit cards, or a travel credit card like the Halifax Clarity.

I was in Norway recently and used my Chase card without any issues.

The big plus point is that I use it all the time in the UK for day to day purchases so it's not like having an additional account purely for overseas use.
  • I think Revolut is amazing. You can use the app to swithch your card on/off, transfer your money between different currencies at a perfect exchange rate, set up accounts for under 18s without having to pay monthly subscriptions and so much more. Here's a link to sign up if you're interested. Feel free to reach out with any questions
