Shell Energy Appeared On Credit File

Morning all,
Checked my credit report this morning to discover Shell Energy has appeared on TransUnion and Experian reports; I am not nor have ever been a Shell Energy customer. The entry is listed as dual fuel, I have checked with my current supplier Octopus Energy (who were exceedingly prompt to respond to my email) and they have confirmed I am still their customer, with no transfer in progress.
On both reports where the entry is listed, it is marked as current and open, with a start date of 10 years ago which matches moving into my property. No history is available beyond an "OK" for the month of July. A partial account number is listed on TransUnion, but is not one I recognise.
In both circumstances, the account has not been flagged as new on the credit report, it appears to have just "slipped in".
Can anyone here offer an explanation to put my mind at ease? I sense contacting Shell regarding this is likely to be a lengthy process.
Kind Regards!

Contact Shell, they are the only ones who can tell you why they have done this1

I've had exactly the same thing happen. Date is also from about 10 years ago (at a previous address). I'm assuming it's from some other company being moved over and something has gone wrong with the old, closed accounts possibly.
I expect I was probably with First Utility at the time but can't be certain.1 -
Same here, I'm showing 2 accounts from 2014 one with a zero balance and the other £825. Both from an old address, not sure what is going on but something is.

Same here too. An account with a start date of 2012 suddenly appearing in July 2022. I'm not currently with Shell Energy and can't remember ever having an account with them. Very strange.1

Same here! Shell Energy Retail with a balance of over £2500 dated 2010 at an address I moved out of over many years ago. I've never even heard of them or had an account with them. If anyone gets to the bottom of this and can explain how to get it removed please can you kindly post an update on here.0

Have Shell taken over a company that you were previously with? I don't know if an exhaustive list exists but I can see that they took over Green Energy, Go To Energy, Pure Planet, Colorado Energy and Daligas in the last year.0

I believe at some point they took over First Utility but my account had been closed for years at that point. I've not lived at that address for 7 years.
Shell Energy have been really unhelpful. They've replied asking me to confirm when Shell supplied the property, completely ignoring that my complaint is that they haven't.0 -
I would recommend advising the Credit Reference companies that you believe the Shell entries are in error. That then puts the onus on them to query it with Shell on your behalf. Best Wishes.0

Exactly the same for me. Two accounts placed on those two CRA's, One with zero balance and one with a balance of £943. Both seem to be related to old First Utility accounts I had. I've written to Shell Energy and their DPO to complain.I've had a response from their DPO basically avoiding my questions and am awaiting their further response to me telling them that.Customer Services have acknowledged my complaint and are, allegedly, looking into this. I will update once I get a response.I had a nightmare with First Utility with this account (from 2013 to 2014) and didn't get it fully sorted until September 2016!! My address, email and phone details are still the same. Did they call or write to query anything before adding these entries? What do you think!0

I've queried it with the CRAs but in the meantime have also complained to Shell Energy.
Unfortunately I can't seem to get anyone there to understand the issue. They've even confirmed the closing date of the account. All they keep saying is I need to provide proof I wasn't living there to have my name removed from the account. I'm not disputing I had a First Utility account, just that they've sent data saying its still open to the CRAs.0
