What is the point of getting a solicitor in these circumstances? You're presumably pleading guilty, as there is no defence to this charge, so all they are going to be able do is offer a short speech in mitigation.
You are more likely to elicit sympathy from the bench if you do that yourself.
Presumably to assist with making a submission of exceptional hardship to reduce the length of the ban.

They will know what wording to use and what points to make to give that the best chance of holding water.

Definitely get a solicitor.  They should know which points that judges take into account in mitigation.  Also most judges regard not getting legal representation as being disrespectful to the Court.

Incidentally, in Guy Martin's autobiography he describes how, with some good legal representation and a lot of hard work on his part to defend himself, he managed to avoid a ban when he was caught speeding in Scotland with 18 points already on his licence.
  • I’d have thought 18 points in the modern world would have meant a suspended sentence.

  • Remember that welsh bloke who rode a motorbike at 140mph through a tunnel a few years ago? He got a suspended sentence. His attempt to minimise his charge was his headlight wasn’t working and he wanted to get home before dark. Didn’t wash.

I took the 18 points figure straight from his book, so in Scotland the points system must be different.
