Just to add to the hilarity, could it be a frog?
It happened in a pipe in Australia when i lived there and in my new place the builders took up a drain cover to see a very cross frog sat there. I'd wondered what the strange noise in the pipes was but new house etc.
I also have a weird gurgle sometime after flushing the loo. I know it's a valve and said weird noise doesn't occour if I've run water off in that bathroom first, even a teeny tiny bit.
Thank you cheering me up :D

Many thanks for your replies and help - and bendy house for such a comprehensive explanation - thank you. Two penny - the frog....when it happened last year....almost a year ago to the day,,,very strange  (warm weather...no winds) i was trying to explain the noise to my sister (our area is rife with foxes - and i said it sounds like a fox with whooping cough has got into my plumbing or under my shower)...it is a sort of springy, graty farty noise is the best explanation and now sounds under my shower - and its literally intermitently all the time now.....fart - five minutes....fart again....sometimes fart fart.....

I was serious about the frog. They used to like the kitchen outside drain and weird noises would happen in the kitchen. I spent ages trying to clear the sink 'blockage' including a plumber who didn't twig either.
It was a day I was hanging out washing I found them.
Goodness knows how they got through the grid. I lifted it and hoiked them out and back they went. Took a couple of goes but all quiet after that.

I do recall many years ago - a teenager - my brother lifted the drain cover and a frog was sitting inside....my sister and myself just screamed, ran in and locked the back door.  (the hole he would have got in by was much smaller than him so heaven knows how long it had been in there...maybe it had been surviving on bits of food coming down from the kitchen sink...but think of the hot water going down and wahsing up liquid...poor thing....
You were very brave to hoik them out...
