In retrospect, I wish I had said to mum and dad 'pay me to look after you'. We'd just bought a new house and money was tight. I couldn't afford to spend all my time with them. The last thing you want to say to parents is to ask them to pay you to spend time with them. But it would have been the ideal situation.
So anyone else in that situation - I know it's hard, but try suggesting this to your parents.
A relative did this for his parents - he was unhappy at work and they preferred to have their son managing their lives rather than strangers.
    It worked very well.
Outside carers were brought in when more personal care became necessary but it meant both of them were able to stay at home until they died, which is what they wanted.
  • I don’t want my children doing this and they are fully aware that if care is required then it will be done by professionals either in our home or if that is not possible a high quality residential home.

I just wanted to add that many local authorites have lists of self employed carers who they have checked and standardized.  You can find details here

This isn't quite correct.  The self-employed carers in this directory have gone through a programme to ensure they understand how to work legally and sustainably and sign up to a set of standards, but are not checked or accredited by local authorities necessarily.  That is not to say they aren't good carers - I would certainly start here - I just didn't want anyone to be misled as it's always important to do ones own due diligence when employing carers and e.g. check they are correctly insured, registered etc.

You certainly do have to provide evidence of a clean DBS and public liability insurance to be included on the link I provided.
