EDF usually tries to recover debt in a bill over the next six months period. So of the £697 more than £315 will be for debt recovery over the next 6 months.

Bad news is that most likely they will be still working from the current cap, so there will be another big increase starting in October.

Unfortunately the EDF payment system does not really do anything between their bills every six months. I assume the message that you are fine refers to the last bill in the beginning of the year.

If the bill in January/February was based on to low estimates, and you submitted meter readings thereafter that will not necessarily generate a new bill. When you submitted the meter readings did you compare them to the bill and could you see that the estimated readings were wrong? Did you do anything about it?

Can you please give us your usage for the last 12 months? Than we can calculate your situation much better?

You might want to speak also to EDF and try to get a payment plan set up.

EDF will send you a new bill on request via CHAT  - they will tell you that it may result in an updated DD but you need current invermination.

I have found with EDF that you must keep you records -  their bills / statements are very vague
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
