We did a grocery shop tonight.  It came to £50. I don't really feel like we bought that much, although we have enough meals to last into next week.  Also we bought a couple of items from Mr L's deluxe brand.  We don't normally grocery shop there so it was a bit of a novelty.  We are still trying to find our feet in the grocery shopping world in our new area.  Can't just walk to Mr M's anymore.  I'm glad we finally sat down and did a meal plan though as we've been winging it for a while.

    Today's OP = £1

    Well done on the OPs.

On L make sure you have their app with £ off vouchers.

    Well done for meal planning.

  • Just catching up and it’s so nice to hear you all happy and relaxed about the house and the garden and everything 😊

It’s a big change for LMG going to being a home owner and I can see how 20 years or whatever till the end of the mortgage feels like it might as well be on the moon with everything going on in the world, especially as she probably hasn’t lived through financial crashes and inflation and war before. Thinking of myself not really bothering with a pension in my 20s here! Obviously older me hugely regrets this but I think if I went back to talk to myself I might still not listen 🤦‍♀️ Give it a few months to let her adjust, and as SH says it’s looking like savings rates will be above your mortgage pretty soon anyway.

I hear you on the food shop, I keep on double checking online baskets to make sure I haven’t accidentally added 10 milks instead of 1 but it’s never once been that 😂

Thank you, I'll look into that. Bf has the app but because I rarely shop there I haven't bothered.  We have a L's nearer to us now so there may be more trips.

You make a good point about LMG.  She does have a pension though.  I started it for her when she was 12 and when she turned 18 I told her she had to pay into it herself.  It's just £10 per month but better than nothing at all.

We sat together tonight and watched a new Net-flix documentary about getting smart with your money.  It has a couple of finance gurus in it that I like.  It was quite good and made us both think about what we are doing financially day to day. I know that a lot of the detail was cut out of it to fit it in to the time they had which is a shame as there is so much more that could have been said.

I shouldn't be so hard on her as she's really quite sensible.

It's good she was even willing to watch the programme with you.

She is actually very interested in investing and creating income.  Also, P^ula P^nt is in it and she quite likes her.  They touched on paying off credit cards quickly and what you spend your money on.  She has a cc and pays it off every month (I suggested that she get it to build credit history when she turned 18) but she admitted it made her check it to see what nonsense she is buying.  If they had mentioned mortgages then I might have had an opportunity but they didn't.

  • I wonder if the FIRE stuff might appeal to her? When I had a look at it there seemed to be quite a few young YouTubers etc who probably come at it from an angle she’d like. I’m sure there’s a Glaswegian woman who’s huge in that space (oh god I sound just like my Mum, can’t keep up with the kids anymore or remember what anyone’s called 😂). I was a bit skeptical of her calculations to keep things going for a few decades, but it might help plant another seed.
