I too really wanted one of these and and got one 50x70 with an illuminated strip down either side.  I find when you get your face up to it the light is so glaring it gives me dark blotches on my retina when I close my eyes. I'm not sure the ones with tiny starlights would give very even or useful illumination.  I suggest you try putting your face up close to a few different styles and sizes.
Which brand and model did you get? And what are the specs on colour temperature and brightness etc?

I honestly can not remember, it was a few years ago.  A dimming function would be really useful though and I would definitely go for one that had that.

Ok, so I've found a couple of brands that are recommended, and they both have models I could happily go with and for around the same price. It all comes down to quality of task lighting from them now, and I'm not sure how to know that without testing them...

The Hib models all have 6400k and a CRI of 85, and the Illuminated Mirrors models can all switch between 3000k and 5000k and have a CRI of 90. Is there something in the specs I can look at to give me a sense of how good these will be for task lighting? As I'll just choose the one that is better in that regard, if I can figure it out.

    Thanks all!

    They'll all be fine.

I'd go with the illuminated with the changeable light warmth and higher CRI which is what gives you the truest colour rendering, not the warmth (or lack of)
