Extending a Marble Fireplace to Accommodate a new gas fire

We want to replace our gas fire but the opening in our marble fireplace is 470mm wide whilst the gas fire we want to replace it with is 498mm wide.

Is it possible to alter the marble opening to accommodate the new gas fire as the fireplace is only 5 yrs old  and I really like it and would like to keep it?

Is the opening behind the fireplace wide enough ?
Marble is a relatively soft stone, so it is possible to cut ~15mm off each side to accommodate a new fire. It is best cut with a wet diamond saw, but at a push, can be cut dry. However, there is a risk that it might crack as the marble is being cut.

To be honest I am not sure, is it possible to take out the existing fire and back plate (by a gas fire fitter presumably) to find out ?

To be honest I am not sure, it has a shiny finish and a marbled effect if that helps.   It wasn't particularly expensive from what I can remember, costed about £550-600 about 5 yrs ago from what I can remember.

Maybe I should just get a gas fire fitter in then to give me a quote.

It’s probably cast marble, basically marble powder mixed with resin and cast in a mold.

Would that make it more difficult to cut?
