M&S Treats

I used a M&S Treat reward of £15 to buy a dress. It wasn’t suitable so I took it back to the shop to exchange for a different size. It was out of stock so I picked a shirt, same price, for exchange. However the manager refused to do this and said that the voucher was non refundable, even though I kept saying that I didn’t want a refund,I wanted an exchange. In the end I gave up and came away still with the original dress. Now I’m left with an unwearable dress. Any ideas what I can do?

I don't know what a "Treat reward" is (can't see anything about them on their website) - is this just swapping reward points for gift vouchers? In which case I would expect you still to be able to exchange, or get a refund (as another gift voucher).

What do the terms of the voucher state?

Was the voucher from M&S or from a third party?
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

I wouldn't expect that by default.

H&M reward points for example are lost if you return items. The terms of the voucher state this clearly.
"Bonus Vouchers will not be refunded / reissued if you make a return or exchange. The Bonus Voucher amount is distributed evenly across each item of your purchase, so if you return one or more items, you will be given a refund for the amount that you paid for each item. Exchanges are available in store only, where you will be given an exchange for an item of the same value to the one you are returning."

So the OP needs to check the similar terms for the M&S vouchers and see what they say.

As I said, I would if you're doing it via the method of swapping points for their normal gift vouchers - if this is some other sort of money-off voucher then I don't know what the rules are.
  • As others have said, I have no idea what a "M&S Treat reward" is.  Is it issued by M&S itself or is it some sort of value voucher issued by a third party?  (ie was it bought from M&S or was it bought form a third party like Wowcher)

What you can do with it and whether it can be refunded or exchanged once redeemed will depend on the T&Cs of the "Treat reward".

If this was an in-store purchase it might also depend on the terms of M&S' own returns policy.  (eg it might exclude certain vouchers).  I believe that they might have tightened up their returns policy over the last few years.

Give it to somebody who it fits and wear something else?  I would suggest selling it on ebay but if its £15 brand new it's barely worth the time.

I suspect it's a voucher issued due to being a Reward Club member.

Thanks for the replies. The reward/treat voucher is something that M&S Bank send to their credit card holders as a thank you. We get 2 x £15 and a £20 voucher sent every year. The terms and conditions about using these and exchanging the goods if necessary are as follows:

    Refunds
    22. If a Marks & Spencer product is obtained solely using M&S reward vouchers any refund will be given in credit vouchers. No cash refunds will be given in these circumstances. Where applicable, credit vouchers will be refunded to equal the value of M&S reward vouchers originally tendered.

The bank confirmed that I should get a credit note if I returned the item but M&S Retail say I lose it. I’ve no idea who is correct or what to do. The bank tell me that M&S Retail are responsible for issuing the credit note but M&S Retail say that it has to come from the bank. I’m totally confused.
