can't grow radishes

Definitely not just heat and dryness! I've lost the radish knack too and there is no shortage of water or excess heat up here in the frozen north! I hadn't really made the link to salad onions, but I'm rubbish now at them, too. And chives. Who on earth has ever had difficulty growing chives!
The common denominator may actually be slugs and the change happened around the time I stopped using the old, hedgehog-killing metaldehyde slug pellets.1 -
A number of radishes in any sowing always seem to fail to swell (what Woolsery calls blind, I presume) - so wondering whether there's just a lot of poor seed around at the moment... (I've had good radishes this year, despite dry and heat - though with the usual few "blind" ones...)
