How can Google Pay present multiple cards?

I tried to pay for something earlier this evening only to get the message 'Please present only one card' on the terminal. Tried it again, same message. At that point the terminal timed out and the amount had to be keyed in again, so I got my card out and paid using more 'traditional' methods (still contactless though).
I'm at a complete loss as to how Google Pay can have , or the terminal think it has, presented multiple cards. Anyone?

Does your phone case have space for a bank card and do you keep one in that slot?
If so, when you present the phone for Google Pay, the phone NFC and the contactless card may clash.0 -
No, I have no cards anywhere near my phone. They're all in my wallet.
Edited to add - and my wallet was in my trouser pocket.1 -
And no new smart watch?
That error may just be a 'cannot communicate correctly' error0 -
No, no smart watch. Thankfully I did have my wallet as I just dont have enough trust in Google Pay (or any other similar system) that it will just work, though I have seen people on here saying they never take a backup.

Have you selected one card as default payment method.

Yes, my Chase card is my default payment card. I even launched the Google Pay app which presented me with my Chase card as the payment method.
I see on the 'net that there multiple reports of the same thing over several years, sadly none of them seem to lead to an answer.0 -
I've repeatedly experienced this, too. I just keep trying until it works, usually on the second or third attempt. I haven't tested this theory by uninstalling it but I've wondered whether might have something to do with also having Curve on my phone.0

I do have Curve on my phone, though why that should interfere goodness knows. Last thing you want to be doing is spending 5 minutes trying to get tech to work when there's queue behind you.
I guess it will remain one of life's unanswered questions.0 -

The closest are the self serve tills, but hard to try different things if one works first time.0 -
I have often found the Chase card, both physical and on Google Pay is very temperamental. On several occasions I have got the message "your card moved to quickly" even when I was holding it (or my phone) absolutely still.
None of my other cards has ever given me a problem.
It does sound more like a Google Pay app / Android conflict, which I guess is possible and would be cleared upon rebooting the phone.0
