in Credit cards
I recently had a communication from Amex to say I was entitled to a credit refund on my closed AMEX account and confirming where it was to be sent. I phoned AMEX independently to the link to check it was legitimate and they confirmed and arranged to send me a cheque, I have now received about 10 cheques for the same amount, I have paid them all in but am worried to spend in case they ask for the money back. Any thoughts?

Give them a call to clarify the position but be prepared to repay it shortly.

Retaining funds you are not entitled to is fraud. How much were you owed by Amex and how much did they send you ?1

I agree that you should set aside the money to pay back should they discover it's an error. But if it is tiddly amounts or nice round ones (e.g. £10) they are unlikely/unable to track it or be concerned. Chances are they would say it costs more to process you returning it then it is worth to them.
Personally I wouldn't waste time calling them. I'd send them an email and then wait for them to reply, assuming they ever do.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on Debt Free Wannabe, Old Style Money Saving and Pensions boards. A printing error where you were entitled to 1 cheque and got 10, then banking all 10 is very silly Not only is it fraud, the firm will be more than happy to obtain a CCJ against you, CCJ and a criminal conviction is not really the best thing to do is it?1

you do need to check - it's not unheard of for firms to pay more than one amount pout as part of a rectification programme - 2/3 would be ok, 10 seems to be a bit strange.
It may take a while for a reconciliation process to catch up and find the error, but the fact that you've cashed them means it probably will and they will ask for the money back.1 -
Thanks all, I have emailed them now, at least it will stop me worrying1

You might find that 9 or even all 10 cheques "bounce". It's possible that AMEX might have put a stop on any or all of the cheques. You could tell them you banked all 10 as you didn't know which cheque was the correct one. But obviously you will need to pay back any sum that clears in excess what you were owed.
