part cancelled flight

Hi There
we as a group of 6 have booked a holiday to Barbados in October
Our outward flight was to change at JFK airport , but the onward flight has been cancelled and we now have a flight 16 hours later.
If I wanted to , could I not cancel the whole flight and get a refund?
we have booked through a third party who say they have queried it and i will be able to get a 50% refund only.
We are thinking of booking a hotel for the delay and the 3rd party booking company say as a gesture of goodwill they will pay for one room ( we need 2 for 6 of us)
Can anyone tell us where we stand please?

much will depend on how the third party have booked this eg as one ticket or separate flights. There will also likely be fees to pay to the third party
Booked as package or flight only? What airline(s) involved? date of travel? how many airline booking references? which third party?

Who are you flying with?

Sounds like it was likely two independent tickets in which case the airline has for the second leg has no responsibility for the first flight and doesn't create any cancellation rights.

Are your flight tickets all proper connecting flights under one booking reference with an airline? If so then the airline may be a be to change for a better itinerary (connecting via another airport or something?)

Or is it separate bookings cobbled together, in which case you might be stuck with it.

The 3rd party is SWIFT im guessing its 2 separate flights then and that's why only half refund.
Im waiting for my friend to confirm this as she has booked it all.
Its flight only , not package.

Look on the bright side, you get the lion's share of a day to spend in one of the best cities in the world (albeit at the expense of the same amount of time in the destination you actually want to go to)!
