Received letter from SGN saying we need to move the GAS meter, help please!

Hi all,

We have the gas (and electric) meter in what is now a downstairs office, it was once a garage. The meter has never been moved and we are now being told it has to be moved. The last visit from anyone was 2 years ago for a smart meter.

The letter from SGN is titled 'built over service pipe' identified as a possible safety risk following a recent H&S assessment.

They are saying it's a safety risk etc. The garage conversation was signed off by the council about 7 years ago and we purchased the house 15 years ago with the meters already in the garage.

My concern is moving them, if they go to the front of the house it will mean going through/under a porch and front door to the front wall, if they go back to the garden, it will mean going through/under a back door and that I'm guessing will be too near a living room window.

We are petrified of the cost and disruption, carpet and floors pulled up, tiles in porch pulled up, driveway pulled up, etc.

Is there anything we can do to fight to keep the meter where its is? and does anyone have any experience of this at all?

Thank you so much for reading.

It will go on an outside wall. They won’t go under a porch or other building either.
The drive shouldn’t need to come up if they can mole from the main to the building.

The building being signed off unfortunately means nothing to SGN, this type of stuff gets signed off all the time and is there until it is found.

ha ha - here you go....
  • So the white box on the wall houses the gas and leccy meter inside the garage conversion. left of the room as you look at it from the front of the house.

As you go through the front door, you walk through a porch and then through another door into the garage conversion, the meters are on your left.

The UPVC door in picture 1 is the back door to the garden.

    Thank you

I can understand why they want to move them.
Ideally you'd have moved the meters when you had the garage converted.
do your neighbours also have their gas meters in their garage? Have they received the same letter?

Is this position any worse than meters under the stairs ?

I can't see the problem either both need actually house access. Even in the garage before conversion.
