SORN via Post Office

I need to SORN a vehicle asap via the post office and send off for a new log book as I need to change my name and address. What date do I put in the form? I want the SORN to apply as soon as possible  but I understand  that postal applications are taking 6-8 weeks to process.

Is there any reason you cannot do it Online?
  • I don’t have the V5C log book, you can’t change your address online without it.
  • The vehicle is parked off road. I’m petrified I’m going to get clamped before it’s processed. I’ve heard horror stories of peoples documents taking monthsx

I am a postie.  Recorded Delivery (Signed For) travels through the post system alongside normal letters, other than requiring a signature on delivery it is not treated with any priority.  DVLA receive thousands of letters every day and it is possible that it may not even get a signature, or with be signed in a batch with many others.  Special Delivery is dearer but should guarantee the letter gets there the next day.

If its off-road why do you think it will get clamped?

Generally for road tax enforcement its picked up by ANPR cameras and a letter with a fine then arrives in the post.
Pretty sure the police don't clamp for road tax offences. If it was on public land it might get towed but thats unlikely if parked legally.

The Agents of the DVLA  cruise around clamping cars that are untaxed and on the road. They have been round my estate a few times, and clamped a few of the "zero tax" cars that people don't realise have to be taxed even though it is free.

    OP, where is it?
They cannot clamp it if it is parked at

(a)any place which is within the curtilage of, or in the vicinity of, a dwelling-house, mobile home or houseboat and which is normally enjoyed with it, or

(b)any place which is within the curtilage of, or in the vicinity of, a building consisting entirely (apart from common parts) of two or more dwellings and which is normally enjoyed only by the occupiers of one or more of those dwellings.

If it is on a field, the verge at the side of a road or a communal carpark they can.

So if it is on your drive next to your house they cannot clamp it.

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

(except air quality and Medical Science ;))

To confirm your bit regarding a signature, a few months ago I sent my licence renewal by recorded delivery. It was signed for around 6.30am the following day, so it would likely have been the overnight security who signed.

    or the postie.
  • It’s parked on my drive, I understand that they can still clamp it even if it isn’t taxed or sorned when it’s parked on private property.
