My husband received a letter in February from Virgin Media saying that we had defaulted on a credit agreement.  It doesn't say what for. Also, no money has been taken out of his bank account.

We ignored it because we have never had any dealings with Virgin Media and thought it was a scam, however every month the letters kept coming and eventually we rang Virgin Media 2 weeks ago( official number.....appalling customer service) who said they would deal with it. All they asked for was his name and email address, but they didn't say what it was for.

We have heard nothing since, apart from another letter: ' Termination notice' and the debt is now £972.

The letter looks genuine. At the time they say we took out the contract, we went onto a comparison site to change our Internet provider.

Has anyone else had this and was there a solution?
I know there has been no money taken, but it is disturbing and I'm worried about identity theft.

Thanks in advance

If the letter is not addressed to either of you by name then scribble "name not known at this address" and feed it to the nearest postbox without opening.

Clicking on some sites , where it asks for info ( address, email address , phone number ) can have in the T&C’s that they may follow up with a phone call etc, so in other words sometime after using the checker site, they call you and try selling you their products , they would argue it’s not ‘cold calling’ as you accepted the T&C’s when you used the checker site….but , obviously you don’t have to take what they offer , and what’s more , they are not likely to process an application, if you don’t provide payment details etc…it could be VM are claiming you agreed to become a customer and then reneged on the deal , but even if you feel pressured into accepting a deal that you don’t want , you have a cooling off period to change your mind , worse thing is to ignore it , or cancel direct debits etc….what products do the say you agreed to take ,they ‘sell’ , landline  phone , broadband, tv ,and  mobile phones .
If this is the way they claim you signed up , then a transcript of the sales call should be made available, or a recording of the call to check what was actually said on that call.

In which case, you might be better off posting on the "Debt-Free Wannabe" board. You'll get better advice there.
You might want to send VM a "prove it" letter, asking for evidence of your alleged debt:
    N. Hampshire, he/him. Octopus Intelligent Go elec & Tracker gas / Vodafone BB / iD mobile. Ripple Kirk Hill member.
    2.72kWp PV facing SSW installed Jan 2012. 11 x 247w panels, 3.6kw inverter. 33MWh generated, long-term average 2.6 Os.
Not exactly back from my break, but dipping in and out of the forum.
