Cancelled Bid

Why do eBay allow bids to be cancelled?

If I bid on something in an auction room I would not be able to say ‘oh cancel that, I’ve changed my mind’.

  • But you're not in an auction room, you're on eBay & that's their policy. They allow it because it's their choice to allow it.

    Fair enough.

reason given was entered wrong amount. The bid was for the listed amount.

While it's annoying it's probably less annoying than a non-paying bidder, which is all that would happen if people weren't allowed to cancel their bids.

It's up to Ebay what T&Cs they enforce and it's often a nightmare but I haven't found a better alternative for selling stuff yet so I just have to accept their ways of working.

How do people feel about a seller who lists an item on an auction/best offer basis for £x .
I offer the opening bid price plus half as much again.
My offer is rejected on the basis the seller wants 5 X the opening bid.
The seller said they thought they'd put a reserve on.
Someone bids the starting bid price, I bid twice the opening bid (higher than my offer) and win the auction.
I pay within 30 minutes of the end of the auction.
The seller says they are refunding my payment as the final amount wasn't as much as they wanted.
So I've bid in good faith, paid in good faith but it will take up to 3 days to get my money back.

I told the seller this and said they had the opportunity to end the listing after they'd rejected my offer.

I'm not best pleased. Would anyone else feel the same way?

The item is listed again with a starting bid of 1.5 times the original listing.
I don't know if there is a reserve on the listing. Is there a way to find out?
    Thanks

I would be angry and would be trying to report them.  That's not on.

If there's a reserve it should say 'reserve not met'.

I've had bids cancelled on me for various reasons. As said rather that then the faff of a non-payer. Plus if a reduced fee weekend you don't need to relist and have a chance to still sell at the lower rate.
May you find your sister soon Helli.

    Thanks.
There are no bids as yet.
There is nothing mentioned about 'reserve not met' on the listing.
I've seen that before on listings but wondered if it only showed if someone had placed a bid.

I used to run an auction house, it's not uncommon. Often it's easier to just cancel the bid and reoffer.

Oh could be, I didn't think of that, sorry.
  • I had a buyer pay £90 for a buy it now today and then asked to cancel the order 3 hours later.Thankfully I hadn't posted the item but I had wrapped it and will be down a pound on the packaging that is now in the dustbin.
