Part of flights cancelled

I had flights booked for me and my Grandson leaving Manchester to Zanzibar via Amsterdam on the 3rd April. On the 25th March I received an email from GetAFlight to say our first flight had been cancelled and there were no other flights to tie in with the others. They were offering a flight on the 7th April. I found a flight from Birmingham after many hours of searching and emailed them about this flight. They charges me £40 to book that flight. My question is can I claim compensation from the airline for the cancelled flight even though I managed to find us replacement flights.

It is within 14 days of departure, or at least it appears to be, so there may be some possibility, depending on why the flight was cancelled. Amsterdam Airport is a complete shambles at present and the airport has demanded airlines reduce the number of flights as they do not have the security staff necessary to cope, if that was the reason the airline will say it was 'extraordinary circumstances' and no compensation would be due.
The real issue is when KLM cancelled the flight, GetAflight (PH Travel Ltd) has a reputation of being slow in advising of changes, if they passed on the cancellation as soon as they received it, then there may well be a claim, if they had known for 14 days before telling you, there isn't a claim against the airline.0
