    I never use Windows operating systems because there are far more secure and reliable alternatives - for its entire history, the design and maintenance processes for Microsoft products have always allowed security concerns to be overridden by marketing priorities.  Full marks to Microsoft though, for being able to sell horribly-broken products with add-ons (virus "protection" software) to reduce the risks of compromise!

    No operating system is 100% secure.
    Here's a "most high-severity vulnerability" in Linux from earlier this year:
    https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/03/linux-has-been-bitten-by-its-most-high-severity-vulnerability-in-years/ - "a high-severity vulnerability that makes it easy for untrusted users to execute code capable of carrying out a host of malicious actions, including installing backdoors, creating unauthorized user accounts, and modifying scripts or binaries used by privileged services or apps."

    This would also affect certain Android builds, which uses Linux as its base.

    @GraceCourt

    I notice you have recommended your more secure and reliable operating system, can you name it please for the benefit of people reading this thread?

    And virus protection is mostly addressing weaknesses caused by the user and not the operating system. All operating systems are capable of running a virus, even your unnamed more secure OS. The fact that 75% of desktop PC's run Windows means that when it comes to writing a virus the choice of platform is to have the biggest impact is going to lead to many more being written for Windows than any other OS.

    Ergo, Windows has a greater potential for infection than any other operating system.

    However, the availability of virtually unlimited security software, much of it free and some of it already built-in, means that many of those potential risks can be mitigated without moving to a “less vulnerable” OS and sacrificing Windows’ usability and flexibility.

    And moving from Windows 10 to 11 will add extra layers of built-in security as long as the hardware being upgraded supports Secure Boot and TPM, which going back to the OP’s original post is surely the main reason for upgrading to Windows 11.
