How do cancel Virgin contract?

I rang Virgin Media at 8:50 this morning to cancel my contract. After 50 minutes with no answer I gave up. I tried the message technique and got transferred to WhatsApp at 9:50. I was contacted by a member of the team at 11:13 who tried to sell me a new deal, despite me making it clear to the Bot that I wanted to leave. She said she was transferring me to Customer Relations at 11:32 and I am stil waiting for them to get in touch.
I have had a couple of messages with smiley faces that looks like they are laughing at me.
I tried the complaints tab and the person on that tried to sell me a deal and, despite my posts, he then transferred me to the Customer Relations team and that disappeared into the ether.
Is there any way I can get my contract terminated? Is there anyone I can complain to?
Can I e-mail them and tell them the contract is ending in 30 days time and cancel my payments after that?
I wouldn't touch Virgin with a barge pole after this and would very strongly recommend that no-one else uses them.
DO NOT USE VIRGIN!!!!!!

You can send your letter to:

Remember to include your account number address, full name and phone number in your letter, so we can contact you to discuss the necessary details.0 -
Why should sending a letter be any more efficient? Would cancellation be taken as the date on the latter? The purpose of the operation, as I see it, is to keep me on their books for as long as possible, even hoping that if they make it difficult enough I will give up and stay, and I can't see me getting a reply for a week. There ought to be a legal requirement on companies to act within the day. I don't want to talk to the retention staff, I am past that stage, I want to cancel. I have gone from wishing to change provider to never considering Virgin again.0

Trying again today. Went on WhatsApp at 8:55, transferred to an agent at 10:04 who tried to get me a deal, the third one who has tried, deal nowhere near competitive so they said they would transfer me to retention staff at 10:26 and I am still waiting. This is scandalous. I can envisage the staff meeting up and exchanging tales of how long they have strung along people wanting to move. Really, really poor company to deal with.
Even sending them a complaint doesn't work. You connect to a staff member who tries to give a deal then says they will pass you over to the retention staff.
