Hi

I have a 50% tear through a £10 note and a $20 note. How can I exchange these for Pound Sterlings?

First of all, which currency are you referring to by "£10"? You say change them for GBP which would suggest its one of the other currencies that use the symbol?

No one in the UK is obliged to offer you an FX service and so its down to their decision if they take the note. If they can't give it to someone else then your only chance is if you have a stack of notes, they use a counter and dont spot the damage.

Depending on the country of issuance then banks may exchange them for fresh notes but it depends on the level of damage. A 50% tear wouldn't be an issue in the US as enough of the security features will still be intact. You should double check however before going to a bank or such as in some countries damaging currency is an issue.

If you mean the £10 is GBP and it was just poor wording then I wonder how you managed to rip a plastic bank note but that aside given the damage is minor your bank is likely to still accept it. If they wont then the Bank of England certainly will as its well below their requirement that you still have at least half the note https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/damaged-and-contaminated-banknotes

I've exchanged many torn notes in the past, usually with a careful sellotape repair job by myself or the cashier.
USD and probably some other currencies have the serial number printed twice near each end, as long as they are both present the note still has value even if it's torn in half or with bits missing.
Of course no money changer is obliged to accept damaged notes, as banks, or at least the central bank, would be in the country of issue.

    Thank you all.
It was a £10 Pound Sterling note. I did not damage it, that's how it was given to me when I took out money from a cash machine. I will take it to my bank and see if they will accept it.

Stick some sellotape on it & spend it.
