Eon - Fixed Deal = Must Have Smart Meter?
Hello
Is there any way to refuse a smart meter and go on fixed?
Eon are saying if i fix, then a smart meter is necessary and there is no option.
Also to note, all tarrifs were updated to go even higher yesterday!

If you take a contract that states you need to take a smart meter you might be able to stop it from happening for a few months, but in the long run they can cancel the contract and put you back onto SVT as you will be in breach of contract.
That would not be a great plan if you pay the higher cost for the next three months and end up on SVT anyway.
I don't think I have really heard of that happen to anybody, but they could do it.
Any reason why you refuse a smart meter? It is only a question of time anyway, normal smart meters are not produced any longer, sometime in the future you can only decide between smart meter or no energy.2 -

The writing says " By choosing this tariff you agree to have a smart meter installed where eligible."
I asked them and they said we wont install only if we cant, otherwise if we can we will have to do it.
When you say a matter of time, what do you mean?

My EonNext fix was also dependent on agreeing to have "smart" meters installed.I have to admit that I used to be quite resistant to them but now they are fitted (gas and electrickery), I wonder what my objections were!Of course, it might not be feasible for your property, if so, they will not be fitted but you may remain on the fixed tariff. I did question them about that prior to them being installed.Their own installer, in a liveried van, fitted them, no dramas at all.The only thing he was unsure about was whether there was enough space for the gas meter. He squeezed it in - just, complete with new pressure regulator.1

Eventually all meters will be replaced with Smart meters as the old type are no longer made.
What's your big fear of Smart meters anyway? You probably have one for your water.Barnsley, South Yorkshire

My biggest issue is privacy & health. I just refuse to let everyone know everything about me. Im not getting clarity on what i can refuse to provide them and also theres concerns about smart meters and that we dont really know how healthy they are at the moment.
I guess ill get them fitted however the privacy thing does bother me.Never Under-Estimate The Power Of Human Stupidity...0 -
As above.
If your old meter breaks or is not certified any longer, you will need to have a smart meter as replacement, or you go off the grid.

@Kapow_2 what privacy issue are you worried about ?
As for health, they use mobile networks for readings and WiFi to communicate with the IHD, there is absolutely no evidence of adverse issues, it's all scaremongering.
Are you living life without a mobile phone and WiFi ?
Maybe you should read your own signature.....

My recent EDF fix has the proviso of a smart meter. Up until now I've been resistant, for no particular reason. However, with the recent energy costs spiralling I've found myself wondering about what certain items are costing to run and now find myself quite looking forward to getting one!The important things in life are not things ........1
