Its due to be operational May 2023 but keep an eye on https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/smart-borders/european-travel-information-authorisation-system_en
PS. its not a visa1 -
With the government looking to abandon the Withdrawal Agreement and/or NI Protocol, I wouldn't make any assumptions about the situation a year from now.1

When ETIAS come into force there will be a 6 month grace period where travellers can still enter the schengen zone without one, but wouldnt worry too much about it as there will be plenty of notice given.kuepper said:I want to book hols for next year but have been alerted to ETIAS which seems to come in 1/1/23 but when can we apply?
Airlines will need time to update their own systems to cross reference API with ETIAS, so when the system is launched initially they wont have the ability to check this info, hence the reason for the grace period.

Yes unfortunately many people mistake electronic travel authorisation for a visa.Sandtree said:Its due to be operational May 2023 but keep an eye on https://ec.europa.eu/home-affairs/policies/schengen-borders-and-visa/smart-borders/european-travel-information-authorisation-system_en

I have a US B1/B2 10 year visa, but because I have a visa I dont need ESTA, ESTA is only for people wanting to enter the US without a visa.

Where is the 6 month grace period mentioned, and when does it start? I've seen 1 Jan and 1 May mentioned as start dates so that would be 1 July or 1 November for implementation?Deleted_User said:

I read somewhere ETIAS will be free for ppl over 70 or did that mean ETIAS won't apply at all to over 70s?0 -
The dates are not fixed yet, so don't worry. The fee of 7 Euros will be for those aged 18-70, it will be free for those outside that age group. The system is still being built so there are many unknowns, so wait until everything is resolved before concerning yourself any further

The over 70s will still have to apply for an ETIAS - not clear on the payment aspect though - I read it as having to pay upfront and then it would be refunded - also unclear if that is an automatic refund, or requires to be claimed.

Who could have predicted this would happen way back in 2016? If only we had been warned.1

Anyone with half a brain would have given the ETIAS was already in discussion before the Brexit vote.[Deleted User] said:Who could have predicted this would happen way back in 2016? If only we had been warned.
Whilst very much anti-Brexit a once every 3 year €7 charge for validation of not needing a visa really wouldn't have appeared in my top 100 reasons of why its a bad idea to leave the EU. As already said, the US have had similar since 2009/2010 and the UK has said it will introduce its own version "soon".1 -
There will be some sort of implementation period, but as I said its not even relevant yet, plenty of info will be given nearer the time.kuepper said:
