We forbade MiL to do this for fear that she would blow the whole place up. She had a habit of turning the MW on for 5 minutes before putting anything in it "to warm it up". Presuming that you have pressed both buttons inwards without success, could it be something sneaky like setting the power level to zero and/or setting the timer to zero?
