In the 12 months to 28 May 2022 I used 12514kWh gas. In the previous 12 months I used 15194kWh. So that's a 17.6% reduction.

This post made me wonder how my usage has been over the last few years so done some digging and number crunching and was suprised with my gas usage.
2019-2020 12,403 kwh used
2020-2021 7,837 kwh used
2021-2022 7,513 kwh used
All from March-following March.
It is funny though as we had our new PVC windows and doors fitted Jan 2020 which could explain the drop in usage. I havent done anything out of the ordinary to purposely reduce usage, since maybe October 21.
I'd love to have record of when I had my boiler replaced but that was about 9 years ago and dont think I still have readings from then.
I wont talk about my electricity usage, still really heavy user, but thats something to work on.Original Debt £37,493.25 @ 25/05/2019 - Now £0 @ 24/02/2023 - £37,493.25 - 100% paid0 -
Out of interest, I've just looked up our gas usage to the end of May annual figures...
15/16 - 11700
16/17 - 12210
17/18 - 13780
18/19 - 12135
19/20 - 12860
20/21 - 14500
21/22 - 8480
~42% drop!!!
Now I can (off the top of my head) attribute 5 things to that dramatic difference this past year.
New Boiler in July 21 - replacing almost 30 yr old one, with pilot light.
Changing our hot water to come on just once first thing (c.45mins), with occasional boost if we run out.
Awareness of reducing hot water wastage/draw...not running the hot tap out of habit, when cold would do.
Milder Winter
More nights away than in 20/21
What proportion of each thing contributes what to the saving, is anyone's guess. How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)0 -
I've averaged 3135 kWh over 7 years with a smart meter but over the last 3 years I've dropped the gas usage down to less than 1000 kWh so most of the usage will have being in the first 4 years as since then I've seriously cut down on using the gas to heat the full flat when I'm in one room most of the day. I use a hot water bottle in winter rather than heat every room.Someone please tell me what money is0

When I replaced my 20 year old boiler 4 years ago my usage stayed the same, if anything it went up 10%.Snwps said:This post made me wonder how my usage has been over the last few years so done some digging and number crunching and was suprised with my gas usage.

New window, and doors was a big save for me too... Heat stayed around longer, less chilly draughts0 -
I'd personally say we had a milder winter, I used around 5,500 kWh of gas less than previous 2-3 years. However I was actively having a real push in cutting back and seeing how little gas I could use. Previous year's I used 9,000 kWh, last year I used 3,600 off the top of my head.sandy700 said:Has the past year been warmer so I have used less gas or is it because of my new windows?
There was days where it was cold and I never turned on heating, but most were mild. I think it helps trying to acclimatize in September, October and November, if you can make it through these months the coldest 2 don't seem that bad.0
