Warranty-does a broken strimmer need to be taken to an approved main dealer?

Hi.  I have a strimmer under warranty & it currently has an issue requiring a repair.  I bought it online from a reputable company on Ebay & subsequently registered it with the manufacturer upon receipt.  Needless to say that they insist it has to go to their approved dealer & they are some miles away.  My regular garden machinery outlet is just around the corner & given time is money not to mention fuel costs I would rather drop it in to them for repairs under the warranty.  Do I really have to use a far away approved main dealer?  What is the consumer law on this please?  I should highlight of course that the manufacturer is fine with it not being sent back to the point of sale so I wonder why I cannot use my regular local supplier.  Many thanks. J

If that's what the warranty says, then yes. A warranty is above and beyond consumer law.

Warranty is supplied by the manufacturer and they set the terms  as to what you need to do to claim under the warranty.

It is normal to have to send it to the manufacturer ir use their approved repairer.

If you want to make a claim on the warranty you have to follow its terms, its not part of consumer law.

Your consumer rights are with the company you bought from. How old is the item? If its over 6 months old then its up to you to prove the fault and up to them if to repair, replace or refund (though you can express a preference) if they accept its faulty and not either user error or acceptable wear & tear. A refund can be reduced to reflect use received before the fault and so if the item is a few years old this is when warranties tend to be better than consumer rights.

Often warranty repairs cover courier costs, is this an option?

The cost will be lower to the manufacturer if it is returned to them.  They will have spares available at lower cost than they would be to a 3rd party, and they have the staff.  You can ask if they will contribute to the cost if you get it repaired locally, but they won't necessarily pay the full amount.

Good news & resolved.  Spoke to the manufacturer & they have given the thumbs up to taking it to my local & regular garden machinery supplier.  Even though they are not a main dealer, they are well known to the manufacturer for selling their products in quantity.  Thanks to all of the above replies.  JP
