Meter reading visits - every 2 years?

How often do you get people coming to read your gas and electricity meters?
I can't remember the last time someone came to read ours! Maybe it's because we switch supplier quite frequently? Or maybe it's because we send in regular readings?
Is it still the case that energy suppliers have to send somebody to read your meter at least once every 2 years?

No, but they have an obligation to obtain a meter reading at least once a year which can be from a smart meter or a customer meter reading.

  • From the Supply Licence:

21B.4 The licensee must take all reasonable steps to obtain a meter reading (including any meter reading transmitted electronically from a meter to the licensee or provided by the Customer and accepted by the licensee

    (a) at least once per year from each of its Customers; and

    (b) as from 1 April 2018 (or any other later date pursuant to a direction issued by the CMA no later than 1 September 2017) at least once per month from each of its Customers with a Supply Meter able to remotely transmit meter readings.

Notwithstanding the above, suppliers are required to carry out meter safety checks. The frequency of these checks is not prescribed. The person carrying out the check will normally take a manual meter reading.

Moved in 5 years ago, had 4 different suppliers but not one has requested a meter read.
Had the water meter read at least once a year on average though. They'd probably be happy with a customer reading but if they come and someone is home, might as well take a reading for themselves.

BG sent someone to read my electricity meter when I SOLR'ed from Neon Reef. Before that I honestly can't remember as it was so long previously to that.

    Whenever the suppliers send us.
Some jobs every 3 months and anything up from there.
It really all depends on what the supplier wants

Up until the SLC change to obtaining a minimum of one meter reading per year, BG had an Ofgem derogation to read domestic meters once every 5 years when other suppliers had a 2 year requirement!
  • I've lived at my present address for over 5 years, and no one has ever read the gas meter, which is in my kitchen. The electricity meter is outside the flat, so it could have been read at some point, but I've never seen it mentioned on any bill.

Have you been providing your own readings, or have you had five years of estimated bills?

Maybe so but I have never been with BG before for electricity until SOLr'ed last Autumn.
I haven't been with them for gas for quite possibly over 20 years.

I do read & submit meter readings on a monthly basis (more for me than my suppliers).
