Three data reward sim and T&Cs
I still have a working Three data reward sim which I use occasionally. I have just seen in the T&Cs (see https://www.three.co.uk/terms-conditions/data-reward-sim ) under
Termination after inactivity that "Three reserves the right to terminate and disconnect the Data Reward SIM in the event you have not activated a Pay As You Go Credit on your account or undertaken any chargeable events or activities (for example, made telephone calls, sent text or photo messages, accessed content or the internet or any other services for which a charge is made) using any credit or allowance on your account within the preceding 6 month period."
Does that mean that if I only ever use the free 200MB (which is what I have done so far) and have never topped up then they could terminate and disconnect? If so, I should probably top up (£2 seems the minimum)...?

My experience is that using some of the free 200MB occasionally is sufficient usage to keep it going. However, the statement 'Three reserves the right to terminate and disconnect...' implies that is not that they definitely will terminate, but they can, and maybe they just haven't done so yet with my SIM...Yes the minimum £2 top-up is available and would be a sure way to keep your SIM active and avoid losing your number.Evolution, not revolution0

I believe that using some of your 200MB free data counts as a "chargeable event" for the purposes detailed in the T&C's. Can't be definitive as both my SIMs have a couple of quid of PAYG top-up applied to them so that they can be used for calls/texts in a second/third phone, and are used at least every couple of months as a test of both the SIMs and the phones.
EDIT TO ADD : sending a text every couple of months is also a check that 3,2,1 rates are still being applied (check cash balance before/after send). Just in case a sneaky price rise were to be slipped in when your back was turned.1 -

I'll put on £2, just to make sure they don't pull that rug under my feet. Also, as you mentioned the old 321 rates are still honoured, so I'll certainly use the SIM a little more than I used to. Thanks for looking into this.
